Many Slingshot and Pouch designs

If you have an inspired slingshot design that you would like to share with others it belongs here. I am politely asking that no outright copies of current-production commercial models be placed here and under absolutely no circumstances will the A+ PS Series Pay-to-Play pdf be posted here. Feel free to share bandset dimensions, materials, pouch shapes, ect as you will.

Slingshot and Pouch designs

Listed below are designs I have made. Each design includes a link for a full size PDF template. Print from Adobe Reader on Letter size paper, set Scaling to NONE.

I wanted to try something a little different than my past efforts. Taking what I learned from making Tex shooter's classic and adding some other features I like. The inside fork design is a copy of Tex's fork, I added flares to the sides since I like the self centering grip they provide. The curve of the handle matches the curve of my palm at the grip. I also wanted to try a glued up blank with some curved (for strength) veneer accent lines. The core is hard rock maple, the veneer is Paduak, the fork and handle sides are birdseye maple (all bow scraps).

If any one wants to copy or alter the design a full size template can be downloaded from (80% version added 05/20/11):

Whamo Sportsman Pattern and MINI ME Version
I remember seeing the Whamo slingshots as a kid but never had one. I thought it would be fun to have something close. I drew the pattern in cad with a scaled picture for reference. It would not be right without some semblance of the logo, but I wanted to make it clear that it is a replica, so I drew a 2011 Replica logo.I was surprised how comfortable it is to hold.

Double Detent Pouch Jig
I have been fooling around with different pouch designs. After shooting different pouch types I have determined (at least for now) that I like the double detent type. It seems the easiest for me to load since it is preformed as folded in half, and the ball easily lands in either detent. I was not satisfied with my first efforts since the ball did not always seat against the back of the pouch. I designed this prototype jig to stretch the leather as it presses the ball in place. Although the jig I made is crude, the design does work. I made a laser cut stainless version later, that works great.

TreFoil Ergo Slingshot Design
This is my favorite design. I have made several variations including the first in Bocote and Purpleheart, the second more compact version in Beech and Black Walnut, and the best one 3/16" Stainless Steel core with Ash over Black Phenolic, over red fiberglass. Videos below are in the order of creation.
Template also includes a 2/3 sized Youth version

Flex Ergo Slingshot
This is a variation of the Trefoil ergo I recently did. Made from Marine Grade Plywood scraps from work. The Marine Grade Plywood is not nice to work with, too much tear out, but it did work. Designed to fit my hand in 3 dimensions. It is a more complex build, but seems worth the extra effort. After using this extensively I found it had more band slap than a flat slingshot, so I did not pursue the design. It does fit the hand really well though.

MXRED Moose Hunter
Here is my effort at designing an Ergo slingshot. After making and shootind the Wham-o replicas I came to understand how nice a thru the fork design with the band slots can be. In hindsight I realize every thing I like about it, Gary (Flatband) said in his Youtube videos. Sometimes I have to learn something thru experience until it sinks in. So I modified my last ergo design to include the band slots, in the process shortened the handle to keep the overall size down. I shot it before finishing and realized I needed a more positive grip, so I added finger grooves only at the base. End result I really like. NO bandslap, I know if I flip an OTT correctly I won't get bandslap, but I do on occassion. The combination of a nice grip and no bandslap makes for an accurate pleasant Shooter. You may wonder why I call it MOOSE HUNTER, not because you could hunt Moose with it, that would be dumb. While it was not intentional as I shaped it I realized it looked like a Moose head. So Moose Hunter seemed like a good name.
I posted full size PDF drawings for the slingshot as shown TTF and also a slightly smaller version that is the more typical over the top configuration. Two drawing files below, the second one is a side view detailing the finger grooves.

Mad Monkey Low Fork Shooter
Why the MAD Monkey? The first slingshot I made back in July of 2010 I arbitrarily named the Monkey. No reason other than I think Monkeys are cool, and I thought it was a funny name. When I shoot I take several slingshots out at a time (I now have about 25) and noticed I would often fall back to using my first, the Monkey. Just because, through luck of the original design, it is a good shooter. So I thought why not make another, but improve the design based on what I have learned in making the last 25 slingshots.
One of the things I like about the design is the small radii stops that exist at the points of contact for the finger and thumb. The was not a stroke of brilliance on my part when I did the original design, I just added those radii because I thought they looked good. So here is the updated version, narrower fork tips, wider throat, and a third point of contact for the little finger. Don't ever use Douglas Fir for a slingshot, it is too soft. This one is made from a piece of Douglas fir that was in my firewood, BUT (notice that is a "BIG" but) it is laminated with crossplys of black walnut, and paduak, mainly for strength, and also to add some cool to it. It is very strong, but the Douglas fir does dent easily. Tex Shooter Latex with a double cup pouch, It is a shooter!

Tex Shooter's Classic slingshot Design
This is my take on Tex Shooter's Classic slingshot Design. I made a full size PDF to post with Tex's permission. If you only make one board cut, make this one. Tex knows everything about slingshots, and this is a great design. I made two, one in Zebrawood, and I liked it so much I made another in black walnut. The lone star medallion I added to show it is Tex's design. This design makes for a really good shooter, Tex's bands and pouch are as good as it gets.

Amazing so many designs (and good pdf printable ones, at that) can come out of one person in such a short length of time.....with one post (along with the other nice things put up by others) this Repro Plans section has become a force to be reckoned with! Thank you very much Mr. Chuck for so generously sharing with everyone.

You have just accomplished the most unselfish act ever seen on a SS forum. An act this generous has shown everyone your not just talking the good fight, your DOING it, and this is how the sharing of designs should work. Giving without expecting anything back.

Rebel Slingshot Forum now has a working system of sharing plans with a formidable number of quality frames as a base inventory, thanks to you. I hope this example will convince other "masters" to add their designs to the collection, with a small handful of more contributors, this site would lead slingshot forums. Those who can afford to buy, will buy, because very few can match the skills needed to produce the quality and beauty of the originals.

This will attract new people, who can finally see working plans of beautiful frames, and they will buy as well as make.
Thank you Mr. Chuck S

Thanks Allen. I enjoy making them as much as shooting. I do find it gratifying is someone makes one and contours or modifies the design to there own taste. I do hope this forum does well because I think the focus is more on enthusiasts, not vendors. I do wonder though lately, it has been very quiet here.

I agree fully Chuck. This forum is the shizznit, as the little neighborhood hoodrats would say. I am just gonna have to break down and get some more baords now I guess...lol... I should have a little more cherry coming so I may whip out a few of your designs from that. My cousin has a stack of the stuff and its good old HARD dry rough cut cherry wood. I didn't think I would ever get it worked into my last fames.
You as well as all the others here are an inspiration...

Hi Bill, I use 4shared.com to link the PDF files. It is just like Photobucket, only for any type of file. You can create an account for free. I have been using the account for about 1 year and have not had any problems. I do not know if you can upload a PDF directly to this forum.

Cant thank you enough for posting the wet formed pouches Chuck,i allways wondered how it was done since i saw ferret/Dave post a pic of one.

Ive been a bit unhappy about how long it takes for my pouches to wear in properly and wanted to speed things up a bit,i tried wetting and binding a ballbearing in the pouches to form a bit of a dent, progressed to using a clothes peg after that,it worked well enough. But after reading about your jig i drilled through 2 peices of softwood, ground the inside of the holes slightly bigger than my .457 and trapped the whole lot in my vice with a ball in the pouch, the pouch is attached to the catty already so i centered the ball to the bands just how i like it,its worked great, much better than my earlier attempts.

Thanks for sharing the idea mate, steve.
